Meter Reader Safety
Last year our meter readers attempted to access over 3.6 million power and water meters in customer yards. Our meter readers are out rain or shine in order to provide a valuable service to our customers. Obtaining actual meter reads means your bill is based on your households’ actual consumption and does not have to be estimated.
To provide you this valuable service we ask for your help to keep them safe as they go about their work.
Identifying your Meter Reader
- Your meter reader wears a uniform that bears the EPCOR logo. All meter readers are required to carry an EPCOR identification card, which displays their picture.
- If you ask to see a meter readers EPCOR identification card and one is not produced do not admit that individual.
Dogs
- If you have a dog, big or small, please make sure that they are properly secured or restrained efficiently away from the meter.
- Dogs can be unpredictable, and a dog that is gentle/friendly with friends and family has the natural instinct to “protect” their territory against a perceived “intruder”. Know when your meter is scheduled to be read and be prepared to put “Fido” away. If you live in Edmonton, and your Wire Service Provider is EPCOR Distribution and Transmission Inc (EDTI), you can find out when your next meter reading date will be using EDTI’s online meter reading scheduling tool.
Access
- Keep yard access gates in good repair.
- On your meter read date please unlock your gates.
- Ensure your sidewalks are kept clear of ice, snow or any other debris that may be hazardous to your Meter Reader.
- Ensure a safe clear path all the way to your meter; hidden hazards under the snow may be a source of injury to your meter reader.
Provide a Safe Environment
- Let us know of any hazardous conditions (if you have stairs or a deck that are not safe, post a sign letting us know to stay off.
- Keep the area around the meter free from clutter; avoid using this area for storage.
- Remove brush, plants, or shrubs that may obstruct the view for reading or cause a hazard to your meter reader.
- Be aware of the location of your meter, what might have been free and easy access when the meter was installed, may now be a hazard. New construction may place the meter in an undesirable location.
Thank you for your help, together we can make safety apart of everything we do!!
