EPCOR finalizes contract to upgrade and operate Taber water systems  

January 23, 2008 - Edmonton - The Town of Taber and EPCOR have signed a contract that will ensure the community has reliable, safe and high quality water systems for decades to come.

"EPCOR provides the latest technology, proven designs and years of experience to the communities we serve," said Dr. Stephen Stanley, Senior Vice-President of EPCOR Water Services. "That's why we are proud to offer Taber residents enhanced services such as Ultraviolet disinfection and other upgrades that meet or exceed environmental regulations."

EPCOR will design and build an upgraded wastewater treatment plant and stormwater system, while operating and maintaining the Town's water systems. 

"The options available to Council were to choose either an alternative delivery approach by which we could capitalize on design innovations, expertise and cost savings, or the traditional approach with a much higher cost," said Ray Bryant, Mayor of Taber.  "We chose EPCOR, which allows us to capitalize on their technical resources and vast experience."

The $18.5 million upgrade project will allow Taber to meet new Alberta Environment water regulations and support future growth and prosperity.  The new design includes advanced technology such as Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection, Biological Nutrient Removal processes and remote monitoring systems. 

Under the agreement, the Town of Taber will maintain ownership of the wastewater plant and water assets while continuing to set rates and bill customers.  The term of the contract is 20 years.

EPCOR was selected to enter into negotiations with the Town following a competitive selection process in the fall of 2007.
