Canmore Wastewater Treatment Plant

The Town of Canmore has the highest level of wastewater treatment plant - it is a Level IV tertiary system. It is designed to treat approximately 22 ML/day.

The Wastewater Treatment Process

The Canmore facility has a primary clarification stage where alum is used to preciptate phosphorus and settle solid. The effluent from the clarifier proceeds to the 2-staged Biofor process, which uses a fixed media in biological aerated filters (BAF) for carbonaceous oxidation of waste and then further nitrification. This helps increase the oxygen and reduce the ammonia content in the effluent. The treated effluent from the filters proceeds to an UV light disinfection stage to remove pathogens before being released to the Bow River. The biosolids from the treatment process are composted on site.
