Okotoks

A rapidly growing population placing increasing demand on water and wastewater utilities is no longer a concern for Okotoks - thanks to EPCOR's innovative solution.

In March 2005, Okotoks' growing population posed a concern as their existing wastewater plant was fully loaded and had discharge limits nearing regulatory upper limits.

The Town took action by entering into a partnership agreement with EPCOR to provide the necessary upgrades to their existing wastewater treatment plant as well as ongoing operations and maintenance of their water and sewage utilities for the next 20 years.

EPCOR's solution not only allowed Okotoks to continue to grow from its present population of 15,000 to its desired population of 30,000 but also saved them more than $13 million based on initial estimates.

"I'm thrilled about the cost efficiencies," commented Councilor Laurie Cherkowski about the forward-thinking proposal.

Completed in fall 2006, the new 24.5 million litre per day (ML/d) tertiary wastewater treatment plant uses the latest standards and technology including a new bioreactor that doubles flow capacity, ultraviolet light disinfection, a biological nutrient removal process and composting of the biosolids sludge.

In order to complete the $11.2 million expansion at less than half of the initial estimated costs, EPCOR took advantage of existing facilities and buildings to save on cost and land requirements.

Town Council also continues to set annual utility rates, approve annual utility budgets and bill customers.
