Taber
Taber, a southern Alberta town of approximately 8,000 residents, is known for its agricultural services and food processing industries. EPCOR has a 20 year utility management contract with Taber to run its municipal water and wastewater and storm water collection systems. The Town continues to own the water and wastewater assets, set rates and bill customers.
EPCOR also designed and built upgrades to Taber’s wastewater treatment facilities and north storm water system. With modern treatment technology such as ultraviolet disinfection, biological nutrient removal processes and remote monitoring, the $18.5 million upgrades now allow Taber to meet new Alberta Environment water regulations and support future growth.
Taber Wastewater Treatment
EPCOR upgraded the existing wastewater treatment plant to a 6.5 MLD Level lll (BNR) wastewater facility which includes Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection of the treated effluent discharged to the Oldman River.
Wastewater and Stormwater Treatment Facts
- The wastewater treatment process includes aerated wastewater stabilization ponds, which are used to treat industrial waste and provide effluent for agricultural irrigation.
- The wastewater collection system is primarily a gravity system supported by two sanitary sewer lift stations.
- EPCOR helped upgrade the stormwater collection system to include a second lift station, an additional forcemain to the river outfall, and the stormwater detention pond was redesigned to help reduce the flood frequency to 1:10 year.
Water Treatment Facts
- Taber’s water supply originates from the Chin Lake Reservoir and Taber Irrigation District Canal and is delivered to the Town by means of a gravity main and irrigation canals respectively.
- Untreated water is also available within the town, primarily for the major food processing industries, irrigation of the golf course and other green areas.
