Banff

EPCOR operates the Town of Banff's wastewater treatment plant under a two year agreement to provide its operating and maintenance expertise for the facility. The Town of Banff, home to over 8,000 full time residents and more than three million guests who visit each year, is the largest community within Banff National Park.

EPCOR's agreement with the Town is effective from March 24, 2009, until June 20, 2011; the Town maintains ownership of the facility.

Wastewater Treatment Process

The plant is designed to treat approximately 14 ML/day.

The facility employs a proven and reliable biological nutrient removal process for biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal. This process, followed by dual media filtration and ultraviolet disinfection, produces exceptional quality effluent. The biological process reduces the need for aluminum-based chemical treatment for reduction of phosphorus, producing a biological rather than chemical sludge.

This sludge is dewatered, mixed with commercial and residential organics and composted on site. The composted biosolids are then cured and deployed on remediation or landscaping projects. For more information about the plant's biosolids composting process, please see the Town of Banff website.
