Britannia Mine Water Treatment Plant

Come explore EPCOR's new Britannia Mine Water Treatment Plant Discovery Centre! EPCOR and the Britannia Mine Museum have teamed up to provide school and public groups the opportunity to discover how the Britannia Mine Water Treatment Plant is cleaning up the environment.

EPCOR is helping to end a century of heavy metal pollution flowing from British Columbia’s historic Britannia Mine. In early 2006, EPCOR commissioned a water treatment facility that captures heavy metal pollution contained in the water from Britannia Mine. The abandoned copper mine previously deposited over 600 kilograms of contaminants a day into the marine environment of Howe Sound. The amount of copper removed in the facilities first year of operation is the equivalent of preventing 30 million copper pennies from entering Howe Sound.

The Discovery Centre, located on-site at the Britannia Water Treatment Plant, offers an exciting and interactive learning experience. Visitors will experience the treatment plant in action; investigate the environmental issue and remediation; and get hands-on with ‘real’ science. Best suited for grade 5 and above. To book a tour, call 1-800-896-4044 ext. 226 or (604) 896-2233.

Britannia Mine Museum

The Underground Adventure is a safe, fun and educational experience for everyone! The Britannia Mine Museum brings exciting history alive with activities, displays and guided underground tours.

Each visit includes a peek into the historic 1923 gravity fed concentrator mill (a National Historic Site and Provincial Historic Landmark); gold panning (you keep the real gold you find); a guided tour through the underground mining tunnel dating from 1912; mining demonstrations and hands-on activities about fossils and minerals; and a viewing of the spectacular 235 tonne ‘Super Haul' truck.

Alberta’s Promise

EPCOR is an Alberta’s Promise ‘Promise Builder’. This government program promotes partnerships to maximize the value of child and youth programs. Children are our greatest resource. They will be the business leaders, community builders and caregivers of tomorrow. It's essential that we focus our attention to them today. Our investment in children will help define who they are and how well they are able to meet their potential.

Alberta River Watch

EPCOR is pleased to partner with Alberta RiverWatch to provide Science 9 and Biology 20 students in central and southern Alberta with a chance to participate in this national award winning science resource program Classes explore a 10 km section of their local river during a raft float trip. Along the way, students make shoreline stops to conduct water chemistry and biology tests. Back at school, students use the data they collect to answer the question, “How healthy is our river?” For more information, contact RiverWatch at (403) 590-5330 or book a field trip here.
