How can you contribute?
- Reduce the use of fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.
- Use environmentally friendly products whenever possible.
- Compost or mulch yard waste to keep it out of waterways.
- Prevent soil erosion by landscaping to minimize run-off.
- Prevent leaks from motor vehicles by performing regular maintenance.
- Dispose of your hazardous materials, such as used batteries and motor oil, at collection facilities.
- Don't dump materials down the storm sewers because they flow straight to the river.
- If you have livestock, ensure the proper management of their waste.
- Clean up after your pets.
- Take part in citizen's groups to protect the watershed.
- Remember that we all live downstream of someone and to follow "good neighbour" practices.
Forming your own watershed group
If you are interested in forming your own watershed team to address local water quality concerns, EPCOR and the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance (NSWA) can provide support for your efforts. Some of the activities you may wish to undertake include:
- View the NSWA's On-line Tool Kit for forming your own watershed group.
- Identify and map the watershed you live in.
- Observe where water drains within your watershed, and what happens during its path to the receiving water body.
- Assess what the problems are with water quality, through visible signs of pollution and/or water quality data.
- Hold public meetings to develop awareness of the problems and to invite other concerns.
- Organize community-based activities with a water focus, such as: streambank trash cleanup days, raft trips, photo contests, and guided tours of the special areas in your watershed.
- Evaluate possible options for addressing the problems.
- Take action!
Please contact us if you would like more information about forming your own watershed partnership.
