Watershed Protection

Water quality is a direct result of human and natural processes within a watershed or aquifer. Limiting detrimental human influences on water quality can reduce public health risks and water treatment costs. Source water protection is now recognized as the first step in water treatment by governments and water utilities alike.

EPCOR's role in Watershed Protection

EPCOR is committed to safeguarding the health of its customers and will strive to understand and protect the source of drinking water supply in all communities in which it operates. Source protection is the first step in the multiple-barrier approach to drinking water treatment. Ensuring the source of drinking water is as clean as possible helps safeguard the health of our customers.

EPCOR's Watershed Protection Program Vision

EPCOR’s Vision
To provide clean and adequate water supplies for all water treatment plants that EPCOR Water Services owns and/or operates.

EPCOR’s Mission
To provide quality water in sufficient quantity for EPCOR Water Services’ communities through:

  • Identifying the hazards/risks to our water supplies – by conducting monitoring programs, identifying spill locations, upstream industrial activities, sewage plant discharges and non-point source pollution
  • Assess and manage the risks identified – how effective is treatment? What are the emergency response plans? Which watershed programs are affected? How effective is treatment?
  • Supporting watershed management planning and implementation – by getting involved with WPACs and Watershed Stewardship Groups (WSGs) and their program activities
  • Implementation of best management practices (BMPs) – by measuring the extent of implementation of BMPs within the watershed and supporting these activities
